Another game, another shutout for St. Ignatius. The Wildcats have yet to surrender a tournament goal and goalie Joe Kalt has 16 shutouts this season after they cruised past Mayfield, 3-0, in a Division I boys soccer regional semifinal Tuesday at Brush.
Mayfield was held to three shots and Kalt tied a school record for shutouts. Ty Smith scored off a throw-in from Alec King, Vaughn Spurrier had an unassisted goal and he assisted Denio Leone’s goal. The No. 1-ranked Wildcats (16-1-3) play the GlenOak-Jackson winner in a regional final Saturday at Rocky River.
North Royalton 5, Amherst 0
The Comets' surprising tournament run ended at the feet of striker Ryan Minick, who scored North Royalton’s first four goals. Shawn Gross had two assists and Brian Beckrest scored one goal. The Bears (11-3-6) advance to a Division I regional final against the Findlay-Anthony Wayne winner Saturday at a site to be determined.
Division II
CVCA 2, Cardinal Mooney 0
The defending state champion Royals have not allowed a goal in four tournament games and goalie Ryan Cook fended off seven shots. Brian Petak scored in the first half and Matt Mason scored in the second. CVCA (16-3-1) plays Chagrin Falls (18-1-1) Saturday at Brush.
Bay 2, SVSM 1
Aaron Adkins scored the first goal in the game’s 62nd minute and Dan Spiesz’s goal six minutes later gave the Rockets a 2-0 lead. Adkins netted a throw-in from Shane Williams. Spiesz picked up a loose ball in the box. Andrew Over scored for SVSM (11-6-3). Bay outshot SVSM, 10-6, with Nate McDonald in the Rockets’ net. Bay (17-2-1) faces the Sandusky Perkins-Lima Shawnee winner Saturday at Lexington.
Division III
Hawken 5, Badger 0
The Hawks head to the regional final having outscored four tournament opponents, 24-0. Tom Granot had a hat trick, Jake McKay scored twice and Dan Wilhelm had two assists. Noah Whitehead marked Badger standout Marcus Heath and the Braves had two shots. Hawken (18-1-1) plays St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday.
St. Thomas Aquinas 2, Lake Ridge 0
Aquinas outshot the Lions, 13-4, and advanced on goals by Adam Cecconi and Marco Pavlek.
