COACHES OF THE YEAR

Division I

Chuck Kyle, St. Ignatius

After Week 1 loss to Glenville, Wildcats won next nine playing one of the state's toughest schedules, and outscored those foes, 341-73.

Steve Trivisonno, Mentor

Cardinals were 8-2 against a brutal schedule that included seven playoff teams and only one that finished with a losing record. They were unbeaten in the Lake Erie League Lake Division.

Division II

Larry Pinto, Mayfield

Led team to a 10-2 record, including a Northeast Ohio Conference division crown, eight straight wins and six straight shutouts in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year.

Division III

Mike Elder, Avon

Mike Collier, Clearview

The second-year coach led his team to a Patriot Athletic Conference division title, a 10-0 regular season and a trip to the regional quarterfinals.

Division V

Tiger LaVerde, Kirtland

Guided Hornets to their first undefeated season (10-0) with a prolific offense and relentless defense that won nine games by at least 21 points. Won the Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division by starting league play with consecutive road victories against Cuyahoga Heights and Richmond Heights.

An unusual choice because the Black Knights were 0-10, but Harriman was widely praised for keeping the team afloat and playing hard despite playing half the season with 12 players and finishing with 16. Newbury averaged 13 points per game and was not shut out.
