OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE YEAR
Division I
Andrew Holland, St. Ignatius
Senior quarterback completed 114 of 180 passes (63 percent) for 1,937 yards and 20 touchdowns in the regular season. Also ran for five TDs.
Division II
Jake Squirek, Normandy
Junior running back gained 1,506 yards on 199 carries for a 7.6 average. Ran for 16 touchdowns.
Tim Wetzel, Mayfield
Junior tailback was a pleasant surprise for the Wildcats, rushing for 1,551 yards and 15 touchdowns. Also threw two TD passes and averaged close to 17 yards on kickoff returns.
Division III
Ryan O'Rourke, Avon
The unbeaten Eagles averaged about 40 points behind the senior quarterback, who completed 104 of 155 passes for 1,978 yards and 30 touchdowns with no interceptions.
Division IV
Mike Hanhauser, Perry
Senior tailback scored an all- division, district-high 31 touchdowns and rushed for 1,269 yards on 147 carries (8.6-yard average) and 28 TDs.
Division V
Paul Fackler, Lutheran West
The senior quarterback was 99-of-176 (56 percent) for 1,643 yards and 23 touchdown passes. He ran for 470 yards and seven TDs.
Billy Urban, Gilmour Academy
The senior quarterback led an offense that averaged almost 32 points by completing 112 of 204 passes for 1,939 yards and 16 touchdowns.
DEFENSIVE PLAYERS
OF THE YEAR
Division I
Scott McVey, St. Ignatius
Junior linebacker tallied 93 total tackles, including 10 sacks, in the regular season. Had 12 other tackles for a loss.
Ben Pike, Mentor
Despite frequent double-teams, senior defensive end had 38 tackles, 13 assists, eight tackles for losses, 6.5 sacks and 21 quarterback pressures.
Division II
Cody Hayes, Mayfield
Senior nose tackle was the leader on a defense that posted six straight shutouts by racking up 86 tackles, including eight for loss and 10 sacks.
Mitch Krotz, Madison
Senior safety was a relentless big-hitter and strong pass defender; led the team for second straight year with 119 total tackles.
Dan Molls, Padua
A district player of the year for the second straight season, the senior linebacker posted 95 tackles, including 11 for a loss.
Division III
Andrew Klindera, Chagrin Falls
Senior linebacker helped lead a defense that posted four shutouts by accounting for 125 tackles, including 11 for loss and two sacks.
Division IV
John Phelps, Perry
Senior defensive end-punter had 23 solo tackles and 32 assists as well as 12 tackles for losses and six sacks; averaged 41 yards per punt.
Division V
Ben Madden, Kirtland
Senior linebacker had more than 100 tackles and three interceptions and was named Defensive Player of the Year in CVC Valley Division.
Division VI
Danny Ward, Fairport
Four-year starter at cornerback is a dominant one-on-one corner as well as a strong run defender.
COACHES OF THE YEAR
Division I
Russ Jacques, Strongsville
Despite losing several playmakers from last season's squad, led Mustangs to a Northeast Ohio Conference division title. Only loss was 37-36 setback to St. Edward in Week 1.
Chuck Kyle, St. Ignatius
After Week 1 loss to Glenville, Wildcats won next nine playing one of the state's toughest schedules, and outscored those foes, 341-73.
Steve Trivisonno, Mentor
Cardinals were 8-2 against a brutal schedule that included seven playoff teams and only one that finished with a losing record. They were unbeaten in the Lake Erie League Lake Division.
Division II
Larry Pinto, Mayfield
Led team to a 10-2 record, including a Northeast Ohio Conference division crown, eight straight wins and six straight shutouts in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year.
Division III
Mike Elder, Avon
The West Shore Conference champs went 10-0 during the regular season and have advanced to the regional finals for the first time since 1996 in Elder's second season.
Division IV
Mike Collier, Clearview
The second-year coach led his team to a Patriot Athletic Conference division title, a 10-0 regular season and a trip to the regional quarterfinals.
Division V
Tiger LaVerde, Kirtland
Guided Hornets to their first undefeated season (10-0) with a prolific offense and relentless defense that won nine games by at least 21 points. Won the Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division by starting league play with consecutive road victories against Cuyahoga Heights and Richmond Heights.
Division VI
Ray Harriman, Newbury
An unusual choice because the Black Knights were 0-10, but Harriman was widely praised for keeping the team afloat and playing hard despite playing half the season with 12 players and finishing with 16. Newbury averaged 13 points per game and was not shut out.
